We don’t intend to write a historical biography of the former Queen of France. You all learned about her in school. But we would like to tell you why she inspires us.

The rebels during the French Revolution demonized her.

The modern era idealized her.

The reality was somewhere in between.

Was she a baddie?

Pretty sure she was. A woman who wanted to enjoy the life she was promised as a princess.

She loved to dress up, loved extravagant gowns, loved grand balls, loved to show off. She shaped the fashion of her own era so deeply that her influence still echoes through design today, in ways she probably never could have imagined.

But was she a bad person? Irresponsible and wasteful?

She wasn’t. She was an Austrian princess, a young girl who arrived in France too early and was still only fourteen on the day of her wedding.

She was expected to behave responsibly and help run a country before she had the chance to grow up. And it ended in anger, hatred, and tragedy.

We live in Austria, and for us she is a fashion icon with a tragic life.
